Why Cloud Computing Skills Are Becoming Essential Across Every Industry

The Cloud looks different depending on the industry

And this is not simply an “IT project.” It affects the people who analyse those health data and who work on insights. And the same pattern is everywhere. 

Finance: The National Bank of Canada launched a cloud-first strategy and built a cloud transformation program around modernization, scalability, cost transparency, reliability, and security. The bank also identified employee development as part of the transformation. 

Retail: Canadian Tire has used Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI to bring real-time insights across its organisation. 

Education: AWS describes Canadian education use cases ranging from virtual computer labs to remote learning to analytics and IT operations. 

The technology can be different in each case. But the basic requirement is the same: store, access, process, analyze and protect information at a scale that traditional local infrastructure may not handle as flexibly. 

So, what does a cloud computing professional actually do?

This is where career conversations often become too vague.

The more transferable foundation is understanding compute, storage, networking, databases, identity, security and scalability, then applying those concepts through a platform such as AWS or Azure.

The Government of Canada considers factors including data sensitivity, security, privacy, and business requirements when selecting deployment models. There are a lot of established Canadian salaries in the market, but students should read salary figures carefully. 

Job Bank currently lists 69 cloud engineer positions in Canada under the software engineers and designers classification. Job Bank reports a Canadian median wage of $48.08 per hour for cloud developers. 

The number can vary depending on province, experience, and portfolio.

Your actual prospects depend on the role, province, experience, technical ability, projects, and employer. A course or certification can strengthen your foundation, but it does not guarantee employment or a particular salary.
