Graphic Design and Branding Fundamentals

Overview

Desktop publishing no longer means strictly print. This course teaches the foundations necessary to make sound design & technical decisions based on the needs of the customer when developing materials. In order to develop an appreciation for brand integrity, students can expect to learn the basics of developing a brand guide and the tools necessary to apply and maintain brand continuity. Students will also be learning typography and design basics as they pertain to page layouts and spreads or packaging as well as technical skills required to meet the specs of a variety of specialized printers.

Learning Objectives / Outcomes

Upon completion of this course the successful student will have gained the ability to:

  • Understanding what goes into a brand guide and why
  • Developing the foundations of sound visual communication skills
  • Improving ability to communicate with clients about visuals
  • Working with different types of print shops to meet any requirements
  • Understand both digital and print graphics requirements and file prep
  • Make informed and efficient decisions about design elements such as fonts, colours and layouts
  • Developing skills for strong project flow and team communication
  • Technical – use industry standard software for setting type, creating layouts and publications such as menus, flyers, books or publications
  • Using tools to facilitate brand consistency in a team and over time

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Basic Admission Requirements

  • High School Completion: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years of age
  • Mature Student Status*: Applicants who have not completed high school and are at least 19 years of age, may apply as a mature student.

*Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and have not completed high school or equivalent. The applicants will be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school. The applicant is required to provide the most recent transcripts or proof of academic accomplishments, a resume or summary of professional accomplishments, and two professional letters of recommendation. The applicant may be interviewed by the Registrar’s or Academic office to further assess their suitability for admission to the program of study.

2. English Language Proficiency

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Minimum scores from accepted English tests (e.g., IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 46, Duolingo 95, etc.).
  • Recent English proficiency test (within 2 years).
  • Proof of English-language education:
  • 2–3 years of secondary or post-secondary education completed in English in eligible countries.

Completion Requirements

To successfully complete the program, students must meet ALL of the following requirements:

  • Achieve a minimum grade of 50% on each course’s final examination/presentation
  • Maintain a minimum attendance rate of 80% for all scheduled courses
  • Obtain a minimum overall grade of 70% in each course to pass

All students must have a laptop or tablet that has a suite of applications for accessing e-books, word processing, creating spreadsheets, charts, graphs and presentations as well as access to high speed internet.
