Drone to Map GIS

Overview

This program offers a foundational introduction to drone technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It covers RPAS piloting theory, basic flight planning, and the principles of aerial image collection. Learners are introduced to GIS concepts and tools for processing and visualizing drone imagery. The course is designed for beginners and focuses on building essential theoretical knowledge for drone-based mapping and spatial analysis.

Learning Objectives / Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify key steps involved in planning simple drone flight missions based on basic project needs and weather conditions.
  • Recognize how flight settings can be adjusted to improve image collection during a mission.
  • Use basic GIS software tools to view and organize drone images for general mapping tasks.
  • Interpret simple drone images to observe visible patterns related to land or environmental features.
  • Review basic map outputs for clear presentation and general accuracy using provided guidelines.
  • Discuss ways to improve maps by giving simple feedback on how well they show useful information.

This program is intended for individuals seeking foundational knowledge in drone technology and GIS. It is not designed to prepare students for direct entry into a related career.

Admission Requirements

  • High School Completion: Applicants must have a high school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • Age Requirement: Minimum 19 years of age.
  • Mature Student Status*: Applicants who have not completed high school and are at least 19 years of age, may apply as a mature student.

*Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and have not completed high school or equivalent. The applicants will be considered for admission based on the skills and experience they have acquired since leaving school. The applicant is required to provide the most recent transcripts or proof of academic accomplishments, a resume or summary of professional accomplishments, and two professional letters of recommendation. The applicant may be interviewed by the Registrar’s or Academic office to further assess their suitability for admission to the program of study.
